From pavement to production suite, “Boards to Beats” transforms Nairobi’s skate culture into raw sonic material.
Grounded in the city’s vibrant skateboarding community, this participatory workshop explores how the textures of public space, wheels on concrete, deck flips, grinds and landings, can be captured, sampled and reimagined as rhythm and composition.
Facilitated by Hasira Hasara and Caleb Kiteme in collaboration with GirlSkate Nairobi and members of the Skate & Sound Collective, the session blends listening exercises, field recording, collaborative beat-making and guided experimentation.
Participants will:
-
Record and manipulate skate-generated sounds
-
Build percussive frameworks from environmental audio
-
Translate movement into rhythm
-
Develop short collaborative compositions
Beyond production technique, the workshop is a meditation on how everyday urban movement can become musical architecture. It’s open to skaters, DJs, producers and anyone curious about expanding their creative toolkit through community-driven experimentation.
