Post-Traditional Jam

Ever wonder what would happen if a band broke out of the standard western tuning ? If "the 12 notes of the piano" were given a rest ?

That's the jam Samuel Karugu and Basile Huguenin-Virchaux propose together with Astrid Bin and musicians from Nairobi, they will improvise within the harmonic possibilities of east african tunings. Scales they gathered on lamellophones of the region will be explored on a blend of physical instruments and digital soundsources. These include the tenor saxophone and the skate embaire, a midi controller that was built during last year's edition of this festival.

You're welcome to immerse yourself in this musical exploration of notes typically associated with tradition, in a broader musical landscape. Unlike them, stay tuned !

This project is supported by a Co-creation grant from Pro Helvetia Johannesburg, the Swiss Arts Council.
