Skate & Sound Collective

Skate & Sound Collective
Founded in Nairobi in 2024, Skate & Sound Collective is a creative initiative of GirlSkate Nairobi that brings together skaters and music professionals working at the intersection of skateboarding, sound, and community empowerment. The project began at The Mall Rooftop with weekly Fridays skate and sound sessions, informal gatherings that combined skating, listening, and music-making as a way to build community and experiment across disciplines.
Skate & Sound collective explores skateboarding as a creative language—using movement, environment, and everyday skate sounds as material for beat-making, sound design, and performance. Since its inception, the initiative has developed workshops, masterclasses, and collaborative sessions that center youth participation, skill-sharing, and gender-inclusive spaces within Nairobi’s skateboarding ecosystem.
Working closely with Sound Systers Kenya, Skate & Sound Collective prioritises accessible learning, experimentation, and cultural exchange, while amplifying voices from within the local skate and music scenes.
The project continues to evolve as a platform for interdisciplinary practice, documentation of skate soundscapes, and the growth of alternative creative economies rooted in urban culture.
