Mazera

Mazera is a mwanzele singer from Tsunza in Kwale County. A fisherman by trade, he and his brother started singing at local burial events around 1990. When an aspiring MP [called Gonzi Rai] offered to take them to Mombasa to record songs at Mbwana Radio Service for his political campaign, they readily agreed to go with him. The first cassette they recorded became an instant hit and so they returned and recorded about two dozen more. The politician, however, did not keep his promise to help them with gigs outside of Durumaland, so Mazera very much remains a regional hero.
