James Welburn

James Welburn's musical journey began in the early '90s, playing bass guitar in avant-rock bands in London. He later pursued sound art studies with Professors Cathy Lane and Angus Carlyle (now of CRiSAP) before venturing into the film sound design industry. Subsequently, he spent a decade immersed in Berlin's vibrant experimental scene, working by day for music software innovators Native Instruments and Ableton, while exploring the city's avant-garde nightlife. A fascination with Norwegian experimental musicians led Welburn to relocate northward. His first two LPs, released by the respected Norwegian label Miasmah (Svarte Greiner), garnered critical acclaim.

Welburn's music resides at the intersection of drone, noise, and electronica, characterised by the manipulation of raw electric guitar sounds with abstract software effects. He crafts dark, enveloping soundscapes and searing bass drones pulsating with mysterious, forceful energy. His compositions feature relentless rhythms interwoven with spacious sound, noise, and music, resulting in immersive sonic landscapes.

Welburn, an Assistant Professor of Sound for Documentary at the Inland Norway Television School is passionate about soundscape creation and audio-visual expression. With 25 years in cross-disciplinary sonic art, including artistic residencies in the Arctic, he produces and performs live experimental music with visuals.

In the past three years, Welburn has focused on collecting sounds from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, exploring soundscapes that reflect the tension between nature, humanity, and technology.
