Alex Gakuru
Alex Gakuru is a Technology Rights Defender interested in the intersection between technology and society. The Director - Center for Law in Information Technology ("CLaw-IT") - consultant on technology policy, cyber law, and regulation and Lead, CopyrightX Kenya Affiliate Faculty. His past roles include Executive Director- Content Development & Intellectual Property (“CODE-IP”) Trust, Regional Coordinator - Africa at Creative Commons, Africa Representative at ICANN’s Non-Commercial Users Constituency (“NCUC”) and Chair, Broadcast Content Advisory Council ("BCAC") at the Communications Authority of Kenya, among others.
He served on Kenya Information and Communications (Amendment) Act Task Force, Creative Economy Task Force, ICT Standards Task Force and on subsequent regulations development and advancing local creative industries interests and ICT Consumer Protection on various policy, legislative processes and regulatory instruments development. He was deeply involved in the formulation of Kenya’s National ICT Policy between 2003-2006 and especially credited for elevating consumer protection at the policy level. Alex has over 25 years experience in the technology governance space.
